Hi there, I’m Pete. I run the technical things at emmacooper.org and this page will explain what’s going on, what’s broken, what’s coming soon, and all that sort of stuff.

I aim to keep things clear, honest and BS-free, but as with many things technical there is a fine line to tread between satisfyingly informative snippets of nerdiness and nascent, fear-inducing technobabble.

Be not afraid, grasshopper -- this won't hurt.

If you find something that's broken or doesn't work as you expect it to, please let me know by using the contact form. It will get fixed.

With all that in mind, here's the breaking news:

Article categories (tags) are sort of working (ish)

View/leave comments

Articles now have their tags hyperlinked, so you can click and find other articles with that same tag. The URLs the links use are a bit messy, but only OCD people (ahem, like me) seem to find that a problem, so most of you will be absolutely fine.

Removed Readablity and ShareThis

View/leave comments

I have a lot of hope for Readability, but the adoption/take-up rate just isn’t there yet. With that in mind I’ve ditched the Readability button from the sidebar (plus the associated Javascript). I’ve also removed the ShareThis button (and Javascript) — I’ve never been entirely happy with the effectiveness of it, and the number of people clicking through to actually share stuff is far lower than the more-familiar Twitter/Facebook buttons.

I’ve added a StumbleUpon button. I know Emma uses it a fair bit, so it’s a good fit for this site. The more astute (or obsessive compulsive) among you may have spotted the block of white space next to the new StumbleUpon button — this is intentional. There’s space for another one or two of the sharing buttons in that white space, but I don’t want to needlessly kludge more things in that will slow down page loading for no valid reason. So, it will remain as white space for the meantime — should something amazingly relevant appear in the future, I’ll look at integrating it, but until that time you should (rightly) enjoy the beauty of white space.

Email subscriptions now available

View/leave comments

Thanks to a suggestion from a reader in Utah, USA I have added three email subscription options in addition to the standard RSS feeds. You can now get email notification to the blog, podcast and linklog by supplying your email address. Just look for the email envelope icon in the sidebar and click the link — you will then be asked for your email address, receive a confirmation email, and then you’re up and running.

Please note: all email notifications are handled by FeedBurner – we will not spam you or sell your address. Or give it away, for that matter. Or do anything sneaky.

Contact form is a bit wobbly

View/leave comments

Contact form = fixed.

There’s something deeply ironic about asking for bug reports via the contact form and then spotting the contact form spits out errors and doesn’t work as expected.

I can say that the contact form is working, but doesn’t seem to give you any confirmation that your message has been sent, which is a bit poor. I will attempt to fix this – in the meantime, please be assured that, assuming you see no errors, the contact form contents will have been sent to us.

Launch day snags and mopping up

View/leave comments

Well, it’s 9am on Friday and we’ve launched 3 days ahead of schedule. I have no idea how this happened, but here we all are. Celebratory punch and pie, anyone?

Please drop me a note if you find anything not working/missing etc. It’s entirely possible I already know about it, but I’d really appreciate a pointer. I have set aside this morning (Friday, June 17) to fix immediate problems and bugs, but the final product won’t be finished for some time to come — this is intentional, but also for my sanity. There’s a certain element of snow blindness kicking in, so a few full nights of sleep and I think I’ll be back to my usual, cheery self.

Don’t be a stranger – tell me what’s busted and I’ll un-busted it.
