The Alternative Kitchen Garden podcast, produced and presented by Emma Cooper, is all about growing edible and useful plants in an environmentally-friendly way. It is completely free to download and listen to.
It’s National Beanpole Week here in the UK, with events taking place in coppiced woodland to support the production of local, environmentally-friendly beanpoles and other gardening products.
It’s also possible to grow some of your own poles and canes. One good resource is Allotment Forestry, and if you’re looking for aesthetically-pleasing home-grown plant supports then check out Grow Your Own Garden Canes over at Fennel & Fern.
During the show we hear about a Cornish WWII bamboo plantation, which you can see in action in a film clip from British Pathé. You might also want to go into the AKG archives and listen to episode 92, which is all about Prickly Nut Wood, a sweet chestnut coppiced woodland.
Emma has been quoted as ‘an expert’ in two articles on the use in peat in gardening by the Telegraph – Row Over Peat and Experts on Peat. Her appearance on BBC Radio 4’s PM show is available to UK residents via the iPlayer until Saturday, and she’s also created her own peat blog (ha ha!) for Permaculture Magazine.
