i am keeping 20 silkies and have experimented with a chicken seeded mini pasture approx 2×2 metres of rocket/arugula.
if you start with a small number of deliberately planted seedlings and allow them to flower and go to seed (all the while eating leaves and flowers yourself) the mature plants can be pulled up and left to dry in situ.
once the pods are dry, let the chickens in. the seed pods will be full of ready rocket seed and the chickens, who will do their level best to eat all of the seed, will simultaneously dig and prepare the soil as they forage. rocket seeds are tiny and invariably a good number find their way into the soil. after a few days there will be nothing left of the forage and you can fence off the area.
now wait. it won’t be long before dozens of rocket seedlings start to emerge and the process starts again.
