The Alternative Kitchen Garden podcast, produced and presented by Emma Cooper, is all about growing edible and useful plants in an environmentally-friendly way. It is completely free to download and listen to.
First up there’s a quick run down of a new BBC gardening show, Around the World in 80 Days in which Monty Don visits some interesting gardens around the world. You can catch a repeat on Tuesday if you’re in the UK, or watch it online with the BBC’s iPlayer. It’s a great show, so watch it if you can. The book that accompanies the series is already available.
This week we’re talking about cress (Lepidium sativum) – the seedling crop that kids everywhere love because it grows so fast – and mustard (Sinapsis alba). And some slightly more grown-up plants that are also called cress – American/ Winter or Land cress (Barbarea verna), Watercress (Nasturtium officinale) and the unusual Paracress (Spilanthes oleracea).
