The Alternative Kitchen Garden podcast, produced and presented by Emma Cooper, is all about growing edible and useful plants in an environmentally-friendly way. It is completely free to download and listen to.

This year wasn’t a great year for onions, but in previous years I’ve always had a nice crop from overwintering onions. Overwintering onions are planted in the autumn (as opposed to spring planting for maincrop onions) and spend the winter in the soil. I find that having something growing through the winter is a great psychological boost, and overwintering onions need very little attention.
See how my bumper crop of onions last year started and ended up on my blog
I always plant Radar organic onion sets from the Organic Gardening Catalog.
And I use the Square Foot Gardening spacing to ensure a large crop of reasonably sized onions. Check out the Square Foot Gardening book on Amazon.
