For the first Alternative Kitchen Garden Show episode for 2012 I am once again opening my seed box to examine some of the forgotten treasures that lie within. And to mark the beginning of the Year of the Dragon, I have chosen plants with an oriental theme.
Find out about soy(a) beans, podding radishes, kintsai (Chinese celery), Stem lettuce, Chop suey greens, two distinctive aubergines and kiwis.
If, after listening to the show, you’re wondering about the recipe I mention then it’s Stem Lettuce Caesar from Ideas In Food. And I talked about chrysanthemum tea on the blog back in 2010.

Hen Solo choosing weeds to eat
What plants can you grow that chickens like to eat? My hens (Princess Layer and Hen Solo) like tucking into leafy greens of all descriptions, as well as some weeds. There’s also an update on the AKG Seed Appeal to raise money to help Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank save wild plant species. Click through to find out more, or donate directly via JustGiving. Thank you!

Sad, rusty garlic
It’s hot here in the UK this week, and I’m gardening in the early hours so I don’t overheat. This morning I was digging up the garlic that is suffering from leek rust, replanting the beds with wonderberries and a cassabanana, and giving everything a good water.
* I’ve got my garlic varieties mixed up in this episode. Thermidrome is a hard-necked variety which stores well, and Porcelain is a soft-necked variety that will grow scapes.*

An army of pepper seedlings
Out in the Grow Dome I’ve been supporting French beans and potting up pepper seedlings. And I’ve been shortlisted for an Observer Ethical Award and had an article about the garden published in Home Farmer magazine.

A ‘volunteer’ potato
I’m outside in the garden, looking at the problems ‘volunteer’ potatoes (potatoes growing from last year’s leftover tubers) can cause.
If, like me, you’re having trouble with cats in the garden this year then have a listen to episode 40, which has some ideas on how to keep them away from your patch.
