Back in November, our trip to Wales came to a close with a visit to a third permaculture smallholding – Carl Legge’s home on the Llŷn Peninsula, a beautiful but exposed spot.

The Llyn Peninsula

Carl, his lovely wife Debs and their son have lived here since 1997, but when they first arrived the land had long been used as sheep pasture – so they were essentially starting from scratch.

They now have a beautifully tidy veg patch and garden at the top of the slope, right next to the house:

Two polytunnels give them the shelter to grow tender crops, including this achocha vine that will still cropping in November:

There are also plenty of perennials around…

With a flock of chickens, and opportunities for foraging, Carl’s smallholding is now a very productive and beautiful place, despite the wind.
