When I started blogging, so long ago, I had a full time job. The blog grew over the years, and I continued it when I became self-employed in 2007, which is also when I started the Alternative Kitchen Garden podcast. Lots of you are kind enough to leave me comments, or send me emails, to say that you love the blog; plenty of you hoped I would keep blogging whilst I was a student.
And I am :) This isn’t a goodbye post. But the blog has never paid for itself, and while I am a student I have very high outgoings (fees and accommodation costs) and a very low income. And that is why I am proposing to start having more sponsored blog posts – posts I have been paid to write.
Now, before you run away and hide, it’s not as bad as you think, and I’m not going to publish anything you’re not going to want to read. I am proposing two options.
Option 1: Fan, non-commercial
I know times are tough, and not a lot of people have spare cash, but if you’re a fan of my work and would like to sponsor a blog post then I will happily write one especially for you – you can even pick the topic if you want, although it would have to be one I can actually write about ;) I would suggest a donation of £5 or more, paid via PayPal. You can send payments to my firstname.lastname@example.org address, and if you’d like to discuss your post first then just drop me a line to the same address. If you prefer, you can buy me something from my Amazon wishlist, which is mostly populated with course-related books, which can be delivered straight to my study bedroom (almost ;).
I will make it clear that a particular post has been sponsored, and by whom (unless you prefer to remain anonymous). I can link to your personal website/ twitter account/ favourite project if you want me to.
And, of course, you always have the option of supporting my work by buying one of my books. Check out the pages for The Alternative Kitchen Garden: An A to Z, The Allotment Pocket Bible and The Peat-Free Diet for more information.
Option 2: Commercial
I get a lot of offers of commercially-motivated guests posts for this blog. I bin them, because I’ve been down that road once or twice and the content is usually either dire or not unique. If there’s no value to the reader in it, then it’s not going to appear on this site. Neither is anything not relevant to my chosen subjects – gardening, food and green living, with occasional forays into related areas.
I am happy to write commercially sponsored blog posts that will be of interest to my readers. Ashes to Ashes was one such post. How to develop a lasting relationship with your tools was another , although the sponsored link has been removed as it was to a competition that has since closed and is therefore no longer relevant.
If you represent a company and would like to go down this route, email me with your proposal. I am happy for you to pick the topic (subject to it being a relevant one), but my words will be my own. I don’t do advertorials, so what I write will be genuinely useful content. I will accept reasonable suggestions of ad link-text, and it will be clear that the post has been sponsored, and by whom – asking for that information to be hidden would be a violation of my ethical code.
You may also be interested in sponsoring a link on my Links page; I don’t have links on my home page.
If you would like to hire me to write blog posts or articles for publication elsewhere then please get in touch.
Finally, and this is important, this is not an attempt to guilt-trip you into giving me your money. If you have spare cash and think I am worth supporting, then please consider doing so. If you are not in a position to do that at the moment, then I am happy for you to continue using the content I provide here for as long as you want, guilt-free :)
