Emma Cooper is a freelance writer, photographer and podcaster. An active organic gardener, Emma lives in Oxfordshire with three plastic compost bins, two wormeries and a pair of bokashi bins. There used to be chickens, too, but they have all moved on to pastures new.
Emma loves making compost and growing edible & useful plants in an environmentally-friendly way. Her first book, 'The Alternative Kitchen Garden: An A to Z', covers a wide range of topics from green gardening techniques to unusual edible plants and was published by Permanent Publications in 2009. Emma's second book, 'The Allotment Pocket Bible', was published by Crimson in June 2011.
Maybe you could offer them a decoy crop – some pea shoots for example? Or a bird feeder – surprised they don’t try and nick the chicken food. Or maybe they do ;)
I can’t blame you for not wanting to chase them out. I can never do it, either. Something about them is too lovely and delightful. I feel the same about the cats that call the farm and nearby chestnut orchard home. I can never be annoyed as they nap on my seedlings under the row covers. Or sleep on the row covers.
