I’ve been doing some housekeeping on the blog lately, and going through old posts. I’d forgotten that back in 2007 I’d come across Victoriana Nursery Garden’s samphire plants and wanted one. It was the wrong time of year, so I couldn’t get one and then I just got caught up in other things.
Apparently there are lots of plants called samphire, and they’re all maritime plants. Salicornia europaea may well be marsh samphire, and is used either fresh or pickled. The thing that caught my eye, of course, is the fact that if you don’t live near the sea you have to water it with salt water.
Yesterday I potted up my two new plants, put together a salt solution (30g sea salt in a litre of water, according to the instructions), watered them, gave them a gravelly mulch ‘beach’ to make them feel at home and left them outside. I’ll keep an eye on them, but it must rain at the sea side, so I’m assuming rain water won’t be a problem.
