Planting onion sets

This was my onion bed in November 2005, packed full of Radar overwintering onions.

Drying onions

9 months later they’d turned into a huge onion harvest which we were still working our way through (I froze a lot) earlier this year.

In contrast, last autumn I only planted a handful of onion sets that a colleague gave me. It was a lousy summer for onions and they only yielded a handful of bulbs that were quickly eaten. We’ve been relying on bought onions ever since.

This is a sad state of affairs and so this morning I have ordered a bag of radar onion sets from the Organic Gardening Catalogue. When they arrive (and is there anything more smelly than a jiffy bag of onions?) then I will have to evict one of the squash plants to make some room for them.
