I had trouble compiling my list of leap year plants as I didn’t have a comprehensive record of new plants I had bought in preceding years. So I thought I had better start one!

It looks as though I am not going to be buying many new plants this year, but I have already bought a few. I mentioned my pair of Elaeagnus x ebbingei when I bought them, and since then I have brought home two much longed-for monkey puzzles (Araucaria araucana) from the Eden Project.

Young Monkey puzzles

The two monkey puzzles will be in the first batch of plants moved to Malvern for fostering by my parents.

At the moment the Elaegnus can’t go, because they look like this:

When I first noticed the white stuff appearing, I thought perhaps it was left over fake snow from Christmas (I bought them in the New Year). I have had a lot on my mind of late and I didn’t notice the problem was getting worse. Today I took them outside and had a good look and they have a pest problem:

I am assuming this is the work of the Elaeagnus sucker (Cacopsylla fulguralis) – does anyone know for sure? And if so, what is the cure? A good wash to get rid of the white stuff (a form of honeydew, perhaps) and loosen the pests might be a good place to start.

If it is the Elaeagnus sucker then it shouldn’t affect other plants, but I still can’t transport a problem plant to a new garden, so they will have to stay here until they are cured.
