Grow Dome wall

Pete has finished building the wall on the main raised bed round the edge of the grow dome. We now need to fill it.

Cardboard

I was re-reading Permaculture – a beginner’s guide by Graham Burnett (a self-published booklet that I can thoroughly recommend, if only for the thought-provoking illustrations) and came across the section on sheet mulching. In a no dig garden, sheet mulching involves using cardboard to reclaim overgrown land without digging. It occurred to me that I could use cardboard as the bottom layer in the grow dome beds – it will add another line of defense against encroaching brambles, and eventually rot down.

Hornwort

The ponds also now have their first inhabitants. Apparently it’s entirely the wrong time of year to be stocking a pond, so I’ve limited the plants to 10 hornwort oxygenators. They will overwinter at the bottom of the ponds when they die back overwinter, but in the meantime they should keep the water fresh.
