Onion sets

When my onion sets hadn’t arrived at the beginning of last week, I sent the Organic Gardening Catalogue an email asking when they would. I received a response saying that they “should be in next week”.

As they still hadn’t arrived on Thursday morning, and another postal strike was looming, and we were planning a trip to the garden centre anyway, I decided to try and buy some more. The way I figured it, the worst that could happen was that I would end up with a lot of onions.

It took us a while to find the onion sets at the garden centre, but I was then amazed that there was a whole rack – with several different varieties. I was less amazed when it turned out that almost all of them were varieties for spring planting – why would anyone buy those now? There were only two varieties for autumn planting, and I settled for ‘Electric’, since the ones I had on order were white.

Of course, when we got home, the ones I had ordered were waiting for me, so now I do indeed have lots of onions.
