I spent an hour pottering about in the garden yesterday afternoon. It was warm, humid and overcast, to the point where I eventually ran out of light. I cut back the buddleja mint that has been enticing the bees, and planted out chard and leaf beet seedlings in the Grow Dome.

That required removing the hay/ straw mulch in the Grow Dome, and since it was nice and dry I stuffed it into the dog kennel that houses my wildlife hostel – the most usual inhabitant, Nathaniel the hedgehog, was not in residence. When (s)he comes back, (s)he’ll have some new material to make a cozy nest.

While I was doing that, Pete refilled the water and food* bowls we leave for Nathaniel. Later on in the evening, it was clear that Nathaniel hadn’t yet stopped by for dinner:

Breakfast with extra protein

But it’s nice to know we had plenty of fresh food on hand in case (s)he stopped by for a midnight snack ;)

*The dry food we keep on hand for Nathaniel is Tom Chambers hungry hedgehog blend. You do know hedgehogs shouldn’t eat bread and milk, don’t you?
