Emma Cooper is a freelance writer, photographer and podcaster. An active organic gardener, Emma lives in Oxfordshire with husband Pete, three plastic compost bins, two wormeries and a pair of bokashi bins. There used to be chickens, too, but they have all moved on to pastures new.
Emma loves making compost and growing edible & useful plants in an environmentally-friendly way. Her first book, 'The Alternative Kitchen Garden: An A to Z', covers a wide range of topics from green gardening techniques to unusual edible plants and was published by Permanent Publications in 2009. Emma's second book, 'The Allotment Pocket Bible', was published by Crimson in June 2011.

Courgette flowers are either male or female. The female flowers are easy to spot because they have tiny fruits forming behind them, which swell when the flower has been fertilized. What I hadn’t really looked at, until this morning, was the different structure inside the flower.
And my first courgette is growing :) This one is an Albarello, but there’s a tiny Sunburst F1 squash nearby, too.
